Well, I'll be short: Can one wear a black bow tie on more casual occasions, like with a shirt and trousers or is it a faux pas?

Id say black bow ties are only for tuxedo's.

A satin black tie is not appropriate for informal or casual occasions.

I do own a very dark blue (almost black) velvet bow tie, which makes an occasional appearance with a striped shirt and suit.

I would never do it. I can't think of even the most creative ensemble where it wouldn't look like you ought to be wearing formalwear.

I'd love to say yes, but know that would be the wrong answer once the tie was put on.

I think the closest I'd go is with a patterned black bow tie, but definitely not a solid one.
