BitTorrent?

Ok...this is something I would never consider messing with, except for something that all the petrol-heads know about. Anyone want to make suggestions or have caveats that I'm not going to find out about in a Wikipedia article? I'm running asymmetric cable (1.1Mbps DL) behind a NetGear FR114P and ZA Pro cranked down wicked tight. Don't hate me, but I'm happy merely leaching in this instance, as there's not going to be limited seeds for this.

Its all I've been using for a year or so now, I'm pretty happy with the UTorrent client.

Are you looking for sites or clients? I just use the command line python scripts which are probably in need of a good upgrade.

I have also been using it for a year or so now. Works great most of the time, depending on how many seeds are available. Its taken me all weekend to download about 6gigs of one season of a TV show due to lack of fully downloaded seeds (im at 70% now averaging a paultry 3-11k/s DL speed, talk about suck!). Though sometimes if its something that just came out or is hot at the moment I can get DL speeds much much higher

Mainly looking for 'whatever you do, don't use x, or don't do y.' Whether or not I should try to run a virtual machine to sandbox this, that sort of thing. I only care about what I can get from finalgear, because I can buy everything else. Command line scripts? Awesome.

Personally, I don't touch it. The end-to-end encryption which affords a much greater amount of privacy isn't there yet, and overall, it's just too risky (vs. reward). People are getting sued; I don't want any part of it. There are other ways, although maybe more complex or less accessible, that can allow one to retrieve the same material, but in much more anonymous environments.

I think peer-to-peer technology is great for commercial and legitimate use, and it's just a matter of time before a clever group of folks put it to good use (Joost, for example, is a TV-over-the-internet with a P2P delivery mechanism brought to you by the same two guys who did Skype).

However, when I am downloading a torrent, like a linux distro or somesuch, then I use uTorrent.

I've been using Azureus for a few years. Haven't had any problem so far. I'm not a security gury, just have a bit of common sense. I've more or less downloaded all the stuff Finalgear has to offer. IIRC, there was someone from the BBC on their forum a while back granting them permission to rip and leech Top Gear materials.

My tailor's son is the president of BitTorrent, Inc. I only use bt to download tv shows that I missed on tivo. If I want to download music I find an open access point

I use Transmission on my Mac, and it works great. Very light.

To use your phrase, my Mac is my downloading sandbox though, less susceptible to nasties etc, plus its online at home all day while my PC travels with me.

Sometimes Ill dl on the PC, in which case, I use Bitcomet without complaint.

I've been using Azuerus for years. You want to make sure you're never sued? Open up your wireless network. You cannot sue on an IP address alone because whoever is hopping on that network can be downloading that information. If this was the case, Starbucks around the country could be sued for P2P activities. I could go down the street to a variety of coffee shops/McDonalds and download ****** Appreciation to my hearts content. That doesn't mean they'll raid the establishments and arrest the employees.

The whole lawsuit thing is a scare tactic and a sham from the RIAA and MPAA. An IP address is simply a location of a router, nothing more. If you actually do go to court, you will win. They just want to scare and settle.

If you're worried about speed issues, open up and close your router when you need it.

How does opening up access to your wireless network ensure privacy?

The greatest thing that happened to general user desktop security was the widespread usage of cable modem/dsl home routers. The NAT'ing the router performs prevents outside users from accessing your network. By opening up the wireless router to the public, you become a prime target.

Any smart attacker simply drives around some wealthy suburbs, attaches to any number of public wireless networks and has a field day. Bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, usernames and passwords to email, online banking, online shopping, etc.

Just b/c your router allows people to access your wireless network, does not give them ability to access the information you described. I can get on McDonald's wireless network, but it's doubtful I can access McDonald's private emails or internet databases from it.

Opening up your wireless network does exactly the opposite of privacy, which is what you want when combating lawsuits. You want to say "there's no way to prove which specific computer used this information." Therefor, the IP address itself is meaningless. But again, just b/c your wireless network is open, that doesn't mean they can access anything else.
