My suggestion would be to balance the need for the perfect restaurant with the availability of a private room for 20 or so. I think this option is always more fun, and it makes the event more like a party and less like going out to dinner together. Sometimes you can find them at the perfect place, sometimes not.

Yes this is what I've done Matt. Since I am paying I am also looking at places that have both semi-private rooms/tables and can do a $60-$90/pp prix fixe menu for me. So far most of those places seem Asian themed (Morimoto, Megu, Wakiya, EN Japanese Bistro, Buddha Bar, Buddhakan).

I know it's a Socal thing, but you shouldn't have to pay for your own birthday party. Right?

It depends... I paid for my own birthday at the French Laundry, but it was also only my closest friends who end up paying me back by treating me to equally delightful dinners with their wives or girlfriends.

I want one night where everyone can go out and have fun and not have to worry about anything. I figure in the days before and after that I will be taken out to dinner by each of the guests/couples.

Is that really doable in NYC? I'm having trouble fitting within a similar budget in Chicago for 15-16 people. Are you accounting for minimum charges or room fees? I checked at Alinea for fun--they wanted a $7k+ minimum for a private room!!!

^ per esempio at En Japanese Bistro $75-$100 charge depending on the room and I think they had 2 prixe fixe options of either $65/pp or $85/pp for a group event.
Most of the other places I checked Asia de Cuba, Buddha-khan/Bar and Megu started at $80/pp. I think Tao was the most expensive for the room charges (if you wanted the "sky box").

I'm not a big fan of either Megu or Tao. But Megu does have a nice private dining area overlooking the ice Buddha. And people seem to like the ice Buddha.

i think the original wakiya / rosebar thought would work very well. keep the whole group together from dinner to drinks, won't have to worry about finding 4 cabs, etc. just throw 'bant +4' on the rosebar list pls
