Not really, many Chinese millionaires I see, are brand whores and they would frequent the boutiques to buy branded stuff.

I think with all his legal problems, he is not a billionaire no longer. But still pretty rich though.

I have seen thousands of worse cases in China but I am really don't understand why people start to talk about Chinese in such a thread. You guys know that is Thaksin, right?

mmmm... I'd have to respectfully disagree. My girlfriend is Taiwanese, living in Hong Kong and we've both spent much time in Taiwan, HK, and the mainland. I think the Taiwanese in general are much more, not only style-conscious and put-together, but also better looking in general overall. Her working theory is the polluted environment and the Chinese disregard for product & consumer safety and the general nouveau riche Chinese who don't know **** from shinola. Not nearly as prevalent in Taiwan in my experience.... in fact, it's usually the foreigners (e.g. Americans) who are made fun of by the Taiwanese for their lack of style and general douchery. Just sayin....

The reason Taiwanese agrees more to our Satorical taste is that because they are just clone/copying Japan and Hong Kong - which is very Westernized and SF approved.

Credit where credit is due: Hong Kong and Japan are a take on American.

From what I've seen many Chinese are brand whores, both rich and poor alike. The rich have genuine from the boutiques and the poor have knock-offs from the markets.

Well, if you are so poor you cant reasonably afford the 100 Gucci lanyard, unless you steal it, you would have to buy fakes. Of course, one can be philosophical and argue why these people are brandwhores, but that is a general tendency among the young or even the old, regardless of race.

You're just assuming that they're millionaires based on how they're dressed and what kind of cars they drive.

There are MANY millionaires that you would overlook as poor because they wear sweats, etc. If you go down to any bank in China town and just look at how much cash gets deposited (not withdrawn) by people who are wearing rags you would be very surprised.

There's a reason why the #1 savings rate in the world is in China and why the Chinese do not believe in using credit cards. It's a very cultural thing to save and not spend -

I've found that many Asian folk who accumulate some money love to flaunt very popular brands that people associated with luxury. i.e. LV/Burberry.

True. But some people I see in the boutiques, I know from personal experience, are millionares and some millionaires I see not in boutiques would wear branded stuff. Not in a tasteful manner mind you, but they buy it probably because it is branded and it shows they are rich and have arrived.

Of course, if something is super expensive, it must be in good taste right? So money can now conveniently give one taste.
