Best way to remove gum from carpet

So one of the roomates in my dorm suite moved out (since im a freshman it was 3 and we had an offer for one to move out) and while moving stuff around we found gum stuck in the carpet. What do you guys tihnk is the best way to go about getting rid of it. No idea how old it is.

You can also freeze it with a can of compressed air and shatter it with a hammer. It should be easy to vacuum up.

I had gum on my car's paint and also on the interior carpeting. A product called "Gunk be out" or something like that will remove it. Just make sure it says something about Gunk Removal on the canister.

+1 I have used this method to get gum out of clothing. It works, though if this is really dug into the pile it might not get everything out. Still, it's the best place to start, as it will get most of the bigger chunks out for you.
