Best way to deal with getting caught red-handed?

Is it best to (a) deny, deny, deny despite all evidence to the contrary (Pete Rose, George Allen); (b) admit only as much as they can prove, and deny the rest (Bill Clinton, Ted Haggard); or (3) admit everything, apologize and blame external forces such as alcohol, bad childhood, the devil (Mark Foley, Mel Gibson).

I like (b). (a) makes you look like a complete idiot. (c) seems completely phoney and at times as bad as (a) although it seems to blow over more easily than (a). (b) has been my mechanism for a while now because it allows me to hear what I'm being accused of in its entirety and apologize for what's concrete and deny or correct what isn't.

If you know her well, and you know what buttons to push, 3 can be the most effective(also the most dangerous). It also depends on you. How well can you tolerate grovelling? A total mea culpa may require a lot of it but depending on what devil you decide made you do it , it could stem the long term bleeding the quickest of the 3 options.

This thread begs the question: why do something that you'd be worried about being caught red-handed?

Depends entirely on the specifics on the situation. The correct answer is always to do what gets you off the hook more easily. Could be either option (though (a) is a tough sell if you were truly caught red handed). (c) is likely more useful is cases where the offence is not as bad. If you really blew it and deserve to be shot, best to go with (b).

Hire a really good lawyer, hopefully you'll be able to cooperate with the authorities by implicating others and cut a deal.
