I'm looking to buy an overcoat for wearing with a suit or with smarter clothing (not casual). As it will probabily be quite expensive and I can only afford one choice (for now) what do you think is the more versatile colour for an overcoat, one that you can wear with navy blue, dark grey suits and maybe some other combination?

Dark grey/charcoal? I'm quite inclined to Zegna's offerings, any other suggestions would also be appreciated of course.

It depends on what sort of suit. If it is a dinner suit or a dress suit, I would say black or midnight blue depending on the colour of the coat. If you keep a black morning suit (literally a mourning suit) in your closet for funerals (matching black trousers and waistcoat), again you need a black overcoat - probably a Chesterfield.

If it is a lounge suit, I would choose whatever the most commonly worn colour of winter lounge suit in your closet is. If it is grey then go for a grey overcoat.

For me it is Navy. I wear lots of grey suit and the navy looks great with them, I looks good with my blue and navy suits and works well with brown suits. I find Gray does not work with some brown suits.
