    Hi

Moved to Ithaca from Los Angeles. Need a pair of boots and socks.

For boots, I've been told to avoid suede/nubuck and crepe soles, but is nubuck OK if I use some waterproofing product? If not, I'll look for boots made of leather and lug soles. Also, is sno-seal the best product for waterproofing leather out there?

Can anyone recommend really warm socks? Like the warmest socks you can find, no such thing as 'too' warm. even in LA I can get frostbite if I don't take care of my feet since my circulation is VERY poor.

    Thanks!

Chrome tanned leather boots + rubber soles is the best I can think of that won't get damaged easily.
I don't know much about socks, for cold weather I just pick a few woolen pairs up from the local outdoors shop.

For socks, you should buy some from Woolpower. Their socks are made in several thicknesses with a terry loop wool that traps a lot of body heat.

I think it is hard to beat Smartwool. I have about 8-10 pair and that is all I wear (literally...every single day), at least 4 or those are around 4 years old and still going strong while the rest are at least two years old. Actually haven't had a pair get truly worn out yet. I try to buy the medium weight hiking socks off of Sierra Trading Post for about $8 each. Now that I think about it...I really can't believe how well these have held up over the years....damn....

I don't wear them daily but the Smartwool socks I have are excellent values.

I have been buying LL Bean wool socks for about 20 years. They're the only thing I buy from LL Bean. I buy them because they last a long time, they don't shrink too much, they come in XL, and they offer different lengths.
