Do you mean $300 retail or the best deal for $300? There is a big difference

For $300 you can find shoes that retail from $500 -$1000

Unless you mean seconds from factory outlets or used from eBay, where can you buy $1000 shoes for $300?

Not a fan of Cole Haan at all. Hate their nike air line.
Out of curiousity, what is so bad about Cole Haan's?

I find their appearance okay, not great. The quality of the leather is okay, not great. However, their shoes are really sturdy, seem to last forever, and are very comfortable to walk in (feel like tennis shoes) b/c of the nike air soles.

From the UK, Cheaney and Barker can also be had for about $300, less VAT, + shipping. Both have several lines, but better ones are full grain leather and welted, = or better to AE or Loake. Herring sells both, and is good about communication if you have questions.

I would put Cole Haan and Kenneth Cole on the same level. I mainly have them for rainy NYC days. I have a brown waterproof Cole Haan derby and black Gore-Tex Kenneth Cole ankle boots. I got each for <$75 (I would NEVER pay over $100 for them because both brands ALWAYS goes on sale). When it comes to quality, the soles are glued, the leather isn't the best, but I would rather have them take a beating on a rainy day than my other shoes. If you take care of your shoes and have a decent rotation, these brands will do okay.

I never buy anything retail (except bespoke suits) because I used to work as a sales rep and know store merchandise always goes on sale. I suggest that you try to find quality shoes on sale that fit under your price range. Looking over my shoe collection which include brands like AE, Church's, Tod's, Regain, Armani (mainline), Prada (mainline), Dolce & Gabbana (mainline), and Varvatos (mainline), I paid at most I think $225+tax (on my Armani & Prada shoes). Don't waste your money on paying full retail; you can get 2 quality shoes if you wait for them to go on sale.

For those that believe GY welts are the standard: yes, I consider Blake & Rapid Blake construction "good quality" too

At this price, forget about Edward Greene and even Tricker's. Alfred Sargent is an excellent choice for this price, followed by Barker and last Sanders.

There are actually a few new Rockport shoes this season that have a 180-degree Goodyear welt, and are beautifully styled, for a little over $100 CAN.
