3) oysters at marshall store, eaten with a chill breeze blowing sea air.

5) pork ribs at Stubbs Barbecue in Lubbock, TX (not hte austin branch) ... hundreds of times, but most memorably with Muddy Waters.

whoops. lots of great meals, but nothing "most memorable" comes to mind. not because of the food, but the whole experience: working the line at Spago at Swifty Lazar's Oscar party ... making a pizza and seeing it being taken to a table with George Burns and Jimmy Stewart. That was pretty cool (as was watching Valerie Perrine take about 20 minutes to eat a giant strawberry right in front of me ... for gentlemen of a certain vintage, that image will probably stick with you).

also, gone but not forgotten: i had some really memorable dishes at the old Citrus when Michel Richard was still here. [sob] i remember a dish of seared foie gras served between thin layers of robuchon mashed potatoes, with a nice demi around it and slightly crisped on top. not a traditional treatment, but man was it delicious.

working at restaurants in LA can be a great experience. i worked as a host at Art's Deli when i was 17 and got to meet pretty much every living film industry personality that i admired, or even would later admire. i've always heard citrus was amazing. never got to experience it

Entirely possible, but I'm pretty sure it was Univer...damn, now I'm not certain. But I don't recall waiters dressed like monks. EDIT: Yes, you're right. I was mixing University Place with Astor Place, and Belgo was at or near the corner of Lafayette. Apparently, the waiters really were dressed as monks. Funny I don't remember that awful little bit.

Some great things at low brow places:

Red beans and rice with corn pone at some forgotten soul food place in downtown Detroit.

Shore lunch fish fry (walleye caught that morning) at a lakeside place in northern Ontario.

Ribs and brisket in some roadside shack in southern Tennesse.

Carne seca tomales, hand tossed tortillas, and chicken mole in a little cantina on the Mexican border.

While we're talking about low brow places, let me say:
Fish & chips at Boat House, overlooking Bodega Bay on Hwy 1
Al Pastor tacos, Tradicion, Chicago

tripe tacos (braised, then sizzled on the flat top) at Taco Loco No. 3, right by my house!

Some of the best tacos in Dallas are at a place called Fuel City.

That's right...it's a gas station.

Near downtown. They have a walkup taco counter. You go into the convience store part of the place to buy a drink and then you eat on the hood of your car.

Yummy.

For burritos we like to go to Taqueria Chanos on Jefferson Street. In the old days it was a tiny little place where they didn't speak English. They've gotten so popular that they've expanded into the adjacent space and upgraded the decor. Last time I was there at least one of the waitresses could speak enough English to take my order. Burritos are as big as your head. Still great.

I've only eaten at Berghoff's once (with Gdl203 and Globetrotter) and it was pretty good, but Globe said it was nothing compared to what it used to be. I guess there was some changing of hands in ownership between family members and it isn't as good anymore.
