Forget retail--go MTM with WW Chan, who is coming to SF in a few weeks.

Good suggestion, but judging from others who have experience with Chan, only get a suit from him if you already own a suit that you think fits perfectly. He can then copy the fit (options such as shoulder padding and shape, lapels, pockets, vents etc. are still up to you). If you do not do so, you will not get as good a suit as you potentially could, having just one fitting and not getting to see your suit as it's being made.

Try Vestimenta or private label at Billyblue, or Canali at Malouf's in Burlingame. Perhaps Vestimenta or Canali at David Stephen. Or wait for a sale at Sak's or Nordstrom. You're out of range at Neiman's.

Is Courtue (sp?) still around? If so, they should have suits in you price range. Also check out Barcelino.

my partner has bought a raincoat and shirts from billyblue, but never a suit. whenever i'd iron the shirts for him, i would always notice how poorly made the shirts were. i've never trusted that place.
