I know typically this forum is higher end clothes, but I'm a poor graduate student who tries to look his best on a very small budget. I have been wanting a sportcoat for awhile but only seem to find ones way out of my price range or terribly cheap looking.

I tend to look better or prefer charcoal/gray types of suits visually, I know navy is the most classic but could I go either way on this?

What would you consider "Modern, but still a bit classic". Basically I want a style that isn't flashy and out of place, but doesn't look like my grandfather would still be wearing. Basically a style of jacket I can wear with almost everything, versatile!

Suggestions on athletic skewed cuts? I'm expecting to need tailoring (hence the even lower budget). I have a 44 chest and about a 33 waist, with decent sized arms and shoulders.

Any store suggestions would be great, I'm assuming my best bet is too look at the discount rack or outlets. I have done getting some nice Allen Edmonds off Ebay very cheap, but I'd prefer to try on a coat first.Though I am not totally sure WHAT to look for, and I'm usually assaulted by pushy sales people at every turn. If anyone can provide examples through pictures or description of what a good cut of jacket should look like, I'd very much appreciate it. What type of material? I know 100% wool is ideal but I'm not expecting that in this range, I'd just like to avoid a totally synthetic jacket if I could.

While I may not be in the same league as most people hear, I'm trusting your opinions since you guys have an eye for this kind of stuff. Just can't break the bank!

Try Suitsupply, they seems to have a consistent fashionable stuff, obviously not your top range drawers

I might try Massimo dutti as well just for the cut, but not sure they are around $250, they do have good sales through out the year

I never like the term 'poor graduate student'.....

2nd suit supply. I have an athletic build myself, and the suits fit great. I would imagine the jackets would do the same. You can even order online, or if your in NY, the only store located in the US is there.

AYou need a navy blazer then, I would try thrifting for one.
