Air - Moon Safari
Thievery Corporation - Mirror Conspiracy (or almost anything else on ESL Music)
any Jobim

I have a goofy cookbook "Win Her With Dinner" -- actually pretty good -- that has music suggestions for dinner in. Someone compiled the list. Is this cheating? Not if you already own 25% of the music

Edit: Of course, "mood music" can be a tricky thing to pull off. It's an easy moment in the evening to look like you're trying too hard, though that can be charming if this is a girl you know well.

I would second everything Shoreman put in his post. That link is has some fantastic rec's. To add: -Al Green "Greatest Hits" -Donny Hathaway "Live" -Luiz Bonfa "Bossa Nova" (my favourite dinner music) -Ray Charles "Blues + Jazz" -D'Angelo "Voodoo" (only if you want to make your intentions abundantly clear) Have fun. A. Edit>Just thought of one Raul Midon "State of Mind" actually just an amazing album in general.

That's a good list. Try "Afternoons" by Eleni Mandell and "Haunted Heart" by Charlie Haden. The first one is for earlier in the evening, the second one is for later.

Shoreman is dead on with his recommendations. In that theme, I also suggest Zero 7, Royksopp (their slower stuff), as well as some tracks by Massive Attack. Boards of Canada can do well filling in some of the gaps when you two are not really listening to the music much...

I've never played Marvin Gaye or anything like that, I feel like it's almost cliche/over the top.

Portishead is underrated for this purpose.

That's pretty colorful, I must say.

I think Nocturnes may work well, actually.
