I occasionally find a hoodie from aeropostale for ~20.

Its more about fit than design/quality to me.

There's no such thing. Primarily because if we're talking retail, you're forced to choose between AA and H&M, the only 2 SF-approved brands in this range.

If you want something slim and without a hood and are okay shopping in the women's section, then Danskin makes some seriously fantastic zipups. Some actually do have hoods, come to think of it. Anyway, they're made for dancers doing warmups so they're very slim fitting and not weirdly proportioned for skinny guys (dancers don't have boobies). I have a white one that had a pocket on the sleeve that I took a stitch ripper to and removed. I think I snagged it at wal-mart for $14 or less. If you wear larger than a men's small shirt though, completely forget it.

I like AA much more.

J Crew drops their hoodies into the $20 range or lower during sale season. This last sale season I picked up two off the web for like $12 with a double zip, nice hood, comfortable lining, and even a reasonable fit. I suspect that Gap's hoodies are decent in that range, certainly better than AA. You couldn't give me another california fleece zip for free.

If you can take the stigma, I've occasionally bumped into a decent subdued hoodie in Urban Outfitters for rather cheap, and a lot of them actually seem to be of decent quality; I picked up one a while ago that I feel is better quality than AA.

I personally like American Apparel hoodies for that price. But if you want to go for the premium stuff, I like Futura Hoodies. They are very nicely made and affordable
