I think this really can be broken to three contenders. Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang and Outkast. While there have been other rap groups who were very good, none completely revolutized their section of Hip Hop and also had street respect, backpack rapper respect and commercial success. Tribe deserves an honorable mention, Black Moon is my favorite group of all time, and their are some 80's and early 90's groups who could be mentioned like EPMD, Furious Five, De La Soul etc, etc NWA had a great impact but aside from Cube none of them could really rap, two of them(Easy and Dre) had others write for them.
I do not count DJ, Rapper combinations as groups so I didn't add with Eric B & Rakim.

Great post. Underground as hell but I do think Company Flow deserves a mention.

Still I think commercial sucess definitely counts so for me it's a real tossup between the Wu and Outkast. Mobb Deep just didn't have the same mainstream cultural penetration.

Mobb Deep???!! If I have to choose one of the three above, the its Wu Tang. My best ever is ATCQ.

Does Blackstar not qualify?

(I understand they're a duo who only made one album)

I prefer Outkast, but I repect Wu-tang. I'm not sure why Mobb Deep was even mentioned, I think your honorable mention of NWA (and you were right about their rap skills), would have been a more impactful choice.

Mobb Deep makes because even when Wu was at their peak Mobb Deep was more popular on the streets. Prodigy was lyrcial enough to be loved by backpackers and they sold well over 500,000 on each of their first to release and platinum on their third, to cover the commercial side.
I really though hard on the Ultramags but I think their rhyme schemes were to simple. Prodigy owns any Beastie Boy and would make mincemeat of Search.

The Wu completely re-energized East Coast rap. Outkast and Goodie Mobb put ATL on the hip hop map - to a point neither probably ever dreamed. It's a hard question but I've got to go with Shaolin here. Just too many incredible individual MCs, and too many phenomenal beats by RZA.

Tribe. Followed by NWA and Outkast.

Edit: Although I think the best album by a group was Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein.

Mobb Deep has three classic albums by any standard. I can not think of another group outside of the Wu and maybe the OK who can claim that. ATCQ was my forth choice. NWA were as good as they were shocking, their impact on pop was greater than it was on hip hop.
