my 4 best of the year all involved mexicans in key roles. coincidence?

#1 BABEL; written, produced, and directed by alejandro gonzález iñárritu. cinematography by rodrigo prieto.

#2 PAN'S LABRYNTH; written, produced, and directed by guillermo del toro. (from guadalajara, my hometown.)

#3 THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP; starring gael garcÃa bernal. it's about a mexican guy who travels to paris and falls in love with charlotte gainsbourg. (this was the best movie i had seen in a long time until the top two crept in at the end.)

#4 NACHO LIBRE; best comedy of 2006. it had a largley mexican cast and crew, including cinematographer xavier pÃ

Hmm, interesting choice. We rented it the other night, and honestly, I thought it was horrible. The music and scenery were great, but I don't think I laughed once.

I would say Little Miss Sunshine would be in my list of top films of the year. Definately beats out Nacho Libre by far.

Haven't seen too many this year, but Volver and The Last King of Scotland were pretty amazing.

+1 for Pan's Labyrinth- such a great film, I highly recommend it, best of the year for me. So inventive, and no over the top CGI.

The Departed follows close behind this...

I missed a lot of movies this year, for some reason I just didn't see anything out there that I really wanted to go out and see. I really want to see Little Miss Sunshine though, definitely coming up in my Netflix Queue. Can't wait for 2007, seems to be much more coming out this year that I have a genuine interest in paying money to see.

Unfortunately, I see about one new movie every two months. Equally unfortunate was that my wife and I wasted one of those evenings out this year on the deplorable The Black Dahlia.

Thus, here is a list of movies from the last year that I want to see:

- Flags of our Fathers
- Letters from Iwo Jima
- Sherry Baby
- Hollywoodland
- Inside Job
- Pan's Labyrinth
- United 93
- Casino Royale
- Children of Men
- Little Miss Sunshine (though I have a suspicion I'll be dissapointed)
- Notes on a Scandal
- Brick
- Little Children
- Hard Candy
- The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
- The Departed
- The Queen
- The Last Kind of Scotland
- Thank You for Smoking
- Rocky Balboa

Edited to add more titles.

#1 I loved, #2 I haven't seen yet, but want to, #3 I didn't really enjoy that much, but it was OK, and #4 seems really, really bad, and I never bothered to watch it.

I'd like to see Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, and The Fountain before making my final decision..

The Fountain by far. Aronofsky will be the greatest director of our generation.

Pan's Labyrinth was excellent. I'm watching The Departed tonight. Dreamgirls, Babel, The Fountain, and Hard Candy are on my short list to see next.

I also liked Inland Empire, Thank You For Smoking, Slither, For Your Consideration, A Scanner Darkly, Stranger Than Fiction, TSOTSI, Akeelah And The Bee, Inside Man, Brick, Casino Royale, The Descent, Half Nelson, and SNAKES ON A G-D DAMN MOTHER F-CKING PLANE, enough to include them in my "Best of the Year".

Oh, and Rocky Balboa deserves an honorable mention for being better than everyone expected.

I'd put LMS ahead of Babel, too, although I enjoyed Babel.

LMS was good. Waiting anxiously to see Letters from Iwo Jima. Replace Nacho Libre with Borat

Cannot think of other films I had seen in 2006, frankly, that were released in 2006

This was a good year for salty, gritty, manly movies, Casino Royale and The Departed topping the list.

The other two movies that I think would be on my list are Children of Men and The Fountain, but I haven't actually seen either.

In order, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Departed, Casino Royale, Miami Vice, Flags of our Fathers, The Prestige. Still need to see Children of Men and The Good Shepherd though. I have also been dragged to see some more female-friendly Oscar bait lately but these did not meet my (relatively low) expectations. Babel was a POS and was redeemed only by Rinko Kikuchi's "courageous" performance (i.e., more muff on display than at a 19th century opera house in the middle of a blizzard).

My ranking:

1. Babel

2. Dream Girls

3. The Departed

4. Little Miss Sunshine

5. Borat

6. Apocalypto

7. Letters From Iwo Jima

(Inside Man was also pretty good, but can't rank it until I've seen Pan's Labyrinth, Last King of Scotland and The Queen, all of which I'm hoping -- from the buzz -- will help round out my top 10)
