He is always very elegant in a understated way...
I think you are right in terms of politicians, but I understand Statesman to be an umbrella term to include other officials such as Diplomats, Ambassadors etc
Politicians who are getting elected can't afford to turn up in a £6000 suit without being accused of being elitist and out of touch...
Francois Mitterand , the Socialist president, used to get his bespoke suits from Cifonelli...
How crazy it is now to even consider a Socialist wearing a £5000 suit and a pair of bespoke shoes?
£6K is too much, but David Cameron's £3K Richard James suit didn't stop him from getting the job, despite the negative publicity.
He got the job because people were fed up with 13 years of Labour government and 99% of people did not know he had a £3000 suit...
Will he make the same claim now most people are seeing him now as an out of touch Etonian???
I do not think so..
That's quite a statement given that it was widely covered by the national press & television.
BTW he was always perceived as an out of touch Etonian, but peculiar how many Etonians make it into politics across parties.
As per my earlier post I agree, broadly speaking, that politicians will be mindful of how they are perceived by their electorate - that's basic PR.
But as I mentioned I feel this thread includes a wider pool of people than just politicians.Who knows Lasbar perhaps you are included too?
I love my bespoke garments but I'm far from being a successful /high flyer Etonian...
I'm a working class anti-hero..
Boris and the way he dresses, uniquely his style. And there is David too.
You are right It does, so which did the OP mean?
And the point about DC being immaculately dressed and BoJo being his usual slightly dishevelled self was made in at least one paper today!
John Kenneth Galbraith writes of a Depression-era senator from Nebraska or somewhere out on the plains who bought his suits on Savile Row. He would show them off at campaign appearances, proudly tell everyone the price, and then say that he wanted nothing more than for his constituents to all be able to afford one.
Except the politicians have different attitudes:-
Boris and his sprezzatura style
