Your examples cited are pretty flawed IMO.

Using as examples how 4x1s look on 2 shorter guys (5'8" and probably 5'3"), and then extrapolating to guesstimate how a 4x1 might look vs a 6x2 on 6'1" Hanks is decidedly stacking the deck [] in your favour.

    Also, the 4x1s...

...acheive their effect on these shorter men by shifting the buttoning point down to lengthen the sweep of the lapel to make them look taller.

Doesn't make sense in my mind's eye to do that for the non-vertically challenged Hanks. You're 'fixing' an imaginary problem created in your own head.

Just my 0.02, and all IMO of course. :)

The tie is distracting, but I see it as flair and a return to the 70s without the peacock.

Hanks easily the best dressed man, with Bradley Cooper second. Pitt/Firth both OK but neither wowed me.

From the ladies, Gwyneth Paltrow's gown is stunning. Sort of makes her look like a caryatid, which suits her posture and build perfectly. Cameron Diaz's dress suited her personality fairly well too.

Sorry - Cloony doesn't make the grade. That morning we were in Saks Fifth Avenue Cleveland and there was a rack of tuxedos - many with peaked lapels but a few with notch lapels and I mentioned to my wife I expect George Cloony, who is so easy to picture in formal attire, would surely opt for the former. Then what the hell - he shows up on the big evening with notch lapels! Shame on him, even with the extremely attractive blonde....

A legs contest between her and Angelina Jolie would have been enjoyable.

Other than this, how did you like the ceremony? :)
Srsly, spot on with these critiques. If I may add a comment, Clooney's outfit was especially disappointing to me because of the wrong notes you mention, plus not that great-looking a tie, as well. Alas, when one is George Clooney, one is allowed leeway concerning sartorial "rules" and customs and the overall effect is still considered striking.

I wish that the guys appearing at the Academy Awards can find the success in life that typifies the StyFo membership roster.

    Maybe some day...
