Does anyone have recommendations for a book on flirting and other interpersonal tips? I've read How to Win Friends and Influence People and loved it, so something along those lines. I haven't read The Game, but I understand it's not very 'authentic'.

Honestly you might as well ask for a book on learning how to ride a bicycle. The only way you'll learn this kind of stuff is by experience. Go join a local charity or Toastmasters or something and mingle with people.

I see nothing wrong with one buying a book as long as they take the advice worth a grain of salt and keep in mind that, like men, all women are different. What works with one, won't another. People get too caught up on the "rules."

Otherwise, you are right that first hand experience will be a big help too.

This plays off the point I made earlier. One of my best female friends tells me that she loves it when a guy contacts her right away, after getting her number. It shows the man is interested in her and not playing games. She sees it as flattering and that it means the man is confident in himself. This is obviously not good advice to give most guys in general, but it does demonstrate the fact that you shouldn't get caught up in these rules that get passed around.
