Mmm... I dont know. Big Star > Jam, or Jam > Big Star. I'd probably have to go with Big Star for familiarity's sake, as that's what I was listening to in high school. Didn't get down the Jam until recently.

Jesus, these answers are killing me.

Greatest musicician ever? Beethoven.
Greatest piece of music: His 9th symphony.
Greatest modern band: Zeppelin
Greatest active artist that still has upside potential (by this I am excluding people like Jimmy Page, the Rolling Stones, etc.): Chris Cornell/Audioslave

VMan specifically asked for modern (pop) artists, no?

Not to get into a "what constitutes great" discussion, but given quality body of work overall, height of peaks of achievement, quality of music, quality of lyrical content, influence, relevance, and musicianship, it's really, really, ridiculously hard to beat Dylan, as much as I enjoy and admire a lot of other artists more than him.

J.S. Bach achieved, in my opinion, the greatest mastery of his chosen art of any artist in any area yet. I'd actually say he was slightly better at writing music than Shakespeare was at putting words together.

As far as rock bands go, I'd say Zeppelin, with The Decemberists coming in close behind.
