I am looking to start a small online business, at the moment it is in the developing stages in my brain, I dont have anything concrete yet, but i was thinking, what is the best way to advertise in NYC??

I was speaking with a friend and we agreed that leaflets would either not be read or impossible to get in the doors since most people live in apartment buildings.

So then I thought about newspapers and magazines, but that would require some research with regard to popular newspapers, shouldn't be too hard, except the costs of the advert might be out of reach.

What other avenues should I explore to try and get my business out there??

Thanks.

Thinking of setting up a website to sell clothes.
I have too much stuff to clog the forums here so I'll sell a little bit here and offer a SF discount on my site.
Just wanna try to get it out there as much as possible.

Have an informative blog, have something new almost everyday
Have an informative website, have something new every day
Have an informative Facebook page, have something new every day, even just a pic of a new product
Link with as many other influencing bloggers, websites and facebook pages as possible
Focus on your Unique Selling Proposition-differentiate from all others and repeat that message
Begin an email list for offers and specials
seek to create a "buzz" by offering "New"
With all of the above in place, pitch NYC magazines, bloggers and newspapers.

Good luck!

2) Affliate Networks like cj.com and linkshare.com - Basically publishers/affiliates advertise your product on their websites, and recieve a commission (That you set) for each sale they make

3) Advertise on related style blogs and forums. You either contact the site admin, or check out the ad-links to see if they use a specialized advertising company you can contact.

4) Sell products as a business on Auctions sites like ebay and Amazon. This can help you get long-time customers

thanks!! this is great info, people here are incredibly helpful!!
