I thought Imperioli totally out-acted him in Basketball Diaries. I couldn't stand him in Gangs of New York, or The Departed.

edit: I forgot about Catch Me if you Can--he was quite good in that.

Most often, an actor's best work are the smaller movies they did. Check out his films alongside DeNiro, Streep, Diane Keaton, and Johnny Depp.

Forgot about Emily Watson, I've always enjoyed her work.

Bale is definitely a very good actor, I usually like him way better than the movies he stars in, he's one of the few american actors who can elevate a picture.

yea, except that Bale is Welsh.

That shocked the hell out of me too, the first time I heard him interviewed; his accent was completely convincing in American Psycho!

He's known as a specialist with accents.

    Johnny Depp
    Robert DiNiro
    Tom Hanks

Bonus: Would have been interesting to see how River Phoenix's (RIP) career might have turned out...

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned Russell Crowe.

He's the one actor I can watch in a film and totally lose him in the character he's portraying.

Sure he has a few duds, but I'm still blown away by films like LA Confidential, The Insider, A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator and Cinderella Man.

I find Russell Crowe horrible. Makes me think I should add it to the other list of worst actors...

I like Steve Buscemi, and I do believe that actor Joseph Gordon Levitt is rather good.

Funny you mention Gordon-Levitt. He had popped in my mind as well. He's made some interesting career choices lately.

    Seems only fair.

    Edward Norton
    Christian Bale
    Johnny Depp
    Javier Bardem
    Mekhi Phifer
    Daniel Bruhl
    ...and I'm drawing a blank (mid 30's)

Ryan Gosling must be on the list, but totally agree with Norton, Depp, and Bale. To a lesser extent Bardem. Would also include Hoffman and Will Smith is pretty underrated.

Mekhi Phifer? Seriously? "Future" from 8 Mile? ER? Dawn of the Dead? Curb Your Enthusiasm? I Know What You Did Last Summer? What roles has he been good in? Can we include James Vanderbeek, maybe Noah Wylie?

I thought he was absolutely amazing in Clockers, that was enough for me.

How is Will Smith underated??? Are you mixing it up with the worst actors thread?
