My former chess partner used to dress something like that. He wore Western-styled sport coats, Western shirts, and a bolo tie (no cowboy hat though). He also wore Native American jewelry. Lived in the southwest, but would come to visit his family in California during Christmas. I knew him because I am close friends with his nephew.

This guy (my chess partner) was something around 80 years old. Everyone called him Uncle John and he spoke with this old Bostonian accent. I don't know how he wound up in the Southwest, but he was one of those old guys who seemingly knew about everything -- ornithology, dendrology, arcane American history, antiques, etc. Just a really wonderful guy. Every Christmas, I'd go over to my friend's home to play Uncle John a game of chess, and our games would commonly last 3+ hours. At the end of every game, I would have to go home and take a nap because he was so good. Concentrating that hard for so long is very tiring.

He tragically passed away in a car accident about five years ago. I inherited one of his bolo ties. I'm still not totally sure how to wear it, but I like the "bolo tie cowboy" look and the gift is a sweet memento.

Just curious, are you still into chess nowadays?

Here’s my boy with his boy:

You can see the name “Kevin” on his water bottle - it’s not his real name but the one he often insists on being called, which he got from Kevin McAlester from Home Alone.

I haven't played in many years. I used to play at a local chess club and a cafe where there was a small community of players. When I moved from that area, I sort of lost touch with the game. I tried playing on ICC, but the feeling wasn't the same. I'd like to get back into the game at some point though.

I played Dustin Diamond once. He was very good.

Very nice! I remember playing chess with my father as a kid, and like many others I got back into it over the last year since all the other sports were on pause.

Here are the trophies of a local chess tournament I recently participated in.

Funny for sure.
But just recently I got 2 MtM shirts (they say artisanal shirt with a custom pattern, so technically "bespoke", which btw is a term that does not exist in Italian so it's always hard to tell whether it is or not, and only did a single fitting before full product). Though buttonhole stitches are a bit gross (why on earth use contrast stitching if you can't make them neat?!) and I really dislike the button down collar they made (stiff and with no roll whatsoever), the high armholes are so much more comfortable that I don't feel like buying RtW shirts anymore, given that price for this kind of custom is comparable with decent (not even good, by SF forum standards) RTW, possibly cheaper when at full price. Ofc if you wear shirts untucked it matters less, but I almost never do, except for summer piquet or linen shirts, preferably in square hem.

< Also a former competitive chess player. I wonder if there's some overlap with CM.
