I'm staggered at how a mere 1½ stone can alter the look of a person. Recently bumped into someone I hadn't seen for about a year. The new woman in his life is feeding him up, and that extra smidgen of poundage has changed a lean and mean middle-aged bloke into a puffy faced individual. It's most noticeable in the face. You wouldn't call him fat, but the suits don't hang as nicely. Never really thought it was such a fine line between the two looks. Is this what we all have coming?

Could get very expensive with bespoke stuff.

Someone's going to point out that 1½ stone is hardly a smidgen... it is in London.

That IS a considerable amount by any stretch of the imagination.

Bear in mind with high-level bespoke there will be allowances for weight-gain (this may also apply to other bespoke or to mtm) .

(Trousers: International waistband – with inlays of 3-4 inches and side seams for adjustments"

There may be some very limited allowances in rtw garments, such as trousers (for slight weight gain, not 1.5 stone) but these vary depending on the brand and it may not be worthwhile get these garments altered.

We put 4 inches of inlay on every coat seam on bespoke so you can increase by about three suit sizes quite comfortably. Bespoke is actually meant to be worn for years and altered throughout.

MTM and custom has less inlay you can grade up about a size.

20 lbs is a lot. Just because the majority is overweight doesn't mean that gaining 20 lbs of weight isn't a lot. It's not surprising his clothes don't fit him and it shows noticeably.

Great thread. Man gains 20 lbs, looks fatter, and his suits no longer fit. Fascinating!

Could have been worse. You could have gained the 1.5 stone. Eat less move more. Remember what Kate Moss said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels".

Before embarking on the world of bespoke suits it's best to keep your weight down so you wouldn't have to keep altering the size of the suit and avoid multiple fittings.

Weight gain is a much bigger problem for shirts. All you can do is dart or add a panel, neither of which look particularly great.
