Pardon my ignorance, but what does self tipped mean? How does one tell whether or not a tie is self tipped? What is the alternative to self tipping?

Pink, Your question is a very good one. If the reverse of the tip of a tie is covered with fabric it is tipped. If the fabric is the same as is used for the tie it is self-tipped. Some alternatives: 1) An unusual one is when the tie is tipped with a contrasting silk. Sometimes we will use an English silk for the main part of a tie and then the client will pick a shot silk for the tipping. 2) A different fabric altogether such as rayon 3) No tipping at all. You will see the reverse of the silk.

You can go to the Garment district in NYC. Both Beckenstein and Rosen and Chadick have some excellent silks. R & C has some great wovens that were bought fromSulka when they closed down a few years ago.

One yard needs to be purchased. depending on the width of the fabric. you will get between 1 and 4 ties.

Tie crafters can make a well made tie for a reasonable price. They have some silks in stock, but not a huge selection.

Unlined 7-fold - with self tipping. (Self tipping on an unlined 7-fold is very rare). English 200 warp woven silk.

Not only will we do very unusual constructions, based on the silk and client requests, but we will often custom weave silks. We weave by hand our own silks in Thailand, and we have silks woven in England.

Hey - that's my tie!

I agree with jcusey. Mulberrywood makes a great tie and provides great service. Working with David and Noina is a pleasure.

Charvet will also do a bespoke tie for about 160 euros.

That's not bad at all considering the fact that Bergdorf wants $165 for a ready-made tie with a thin lining.

Yes. On special order, for 190 euros. They have a few in RTW but the patterns are ghastly.
