Bespoke / MTM Sport Coat in NYC

(Yet another NYC question but can't find the answer to my question so here goes...)

Hi all!

I'm looking to find a good tailor/store for MTM or bespoke sport coats. I am 5'8 but have small chest/shoulders/waste and most RTW stuff look big on me. I would ideally like to find a place where I can build a relationship over time. Budget is under $1k for a single sport coat. I can stretch it to $1.5k for something that can last but cheaper is definitely better if possible. Locations in Manhattan would be ideal.

Thanks!

Your size doesn’t seem all that unusual…I’d start with SuitSupply. I’ll bet their otr will fit and if it doesn’t, they have a good custom program well within your budget.

Thanks Phillip! I appreciate the advice and will try them out. Do you have any suggestions for other places to try out before making a final call if the OTR doesn't fit well?

At your budget your options for decent quality custom are limited. You won’t find true bespoke of any reasonable quality. SuitSupply goes down to some pretty small sizes (I think 34R) and they have a good money-back guarantee on their custom tailoring so I agree with checking them out. Think Mr. Ned is within the high end of your budget but I’ve never worked with them myself.

Thank you! This seems very reasonable. I'll give them a try.

Are there any trunk shows (or other venues) that you'd recommend in NYC to get a better understanding for what more $ gets you? I don't know much about the subject and may reconsider my price range with a better understanding.

I'd suggest you contact Cad&the Dandy, who has a permanent showroom in NYC. Let them know that you're not ready to order anything but are looking into what bespoke could do for you (they also carry a decent selection of RtW made to the same standard). There are, of course, other tailors you could ask, I'm suggesting Cad because they're very accustomed to first-time buyers and they run a large operation, so they usually have sales reps who have time to chat. Keep in mind, full bespoke will require you to AT LEAST double your budget, especially in NYC.

Going to a trunk show to "get a better understanding" could be hard, because at trunk shows they have limited time and have to fill that time with paying clients to make the trip profitable, so I would suggest inquiring with a local tailor.

This is super useful! I was clearly under the wrong impression about what Trunk Shows are for. Thanks for the suggestion.

It differs a bit: RtW brands that do trunk shows are generally there to show off their stuff and let people try it on, so they can order it online. But for bespoke it's generally different: it's generally to see clients (many require that you book a time with them), and they take orders and do fittings. Some larger tailors will also do a mingle/meet and greet, but it's not given.

Do you know of any good RtW trunk shows that would be good for getting better acquainted with different styles? Would that make sense?

Is there a particular reason you're so hung up on trunk shows? You have places like the armoury in NYC, who have a proper store with a lot more merch than you'll see at most trunk shows: https://www.thearmoury.com/contact
Nope my question was about Trunk Shows or other venues.

Are there any trunk shows (or other venues) that you'd recommend in NYC to get a better understanding for what more $ gets you?
I'll give the Armoury a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
