Here is a link to the MAD show I mentioned: http://collections.madmuseum.org/co...,/is/,/516/,/true/,/false&profile=exhibitions
Monte's makers were in the show (even one of the models)
A different Vanilla (not the track bike I was thinking of, above) from the show:

Can anyone recommend a good carbon bike in the ~$3k range?

Local shops carry Specialized, Trek, Cervelo, Cannondale, Pinarello but I am willing to travel for something else. Not really interested in $5k+ titanium bikes.

Interesting. Is that a sunglasses holder behind the seat? I'm thinking that on a ride like this you want to have on your cutoff driving gloves and aviators.

What is the point of posting and then deleting what you post before anyone can read it? Why bother typing it in the first place?

Felt, Ridley, and Scott are three brands that immediately come to mind. All have carbon models. Litespeed, while known for its titanium models, also has produced carbon models as well.

Love that Klein. I have a pre-Trek Attitude that I still ride from time to time.

Now I've never heard of any of those makes. These are all racing bikes anyway, not really my thing, Never really liked drop handlebars, razor-blade hard saddles and the thin wheels and tyres.

Great thread btw. I'm building a couple vintage steel frames, but got stalled last winter, guess I'm going to have to get my butt in gear to get these completed!

Nice rides, Monte. I'm still trying to figure out who made this frame, I thought maybe the seat stay would provide a hint? if you have any idea please let me know.

I ordered this Independent Fabrication Steel Crown Jewel frame and slowly built it with affordable parts and spare parts. I sold it last year and was almost in tears when I packed it for the new owner. aesthetically it was my favorite bike, IF name this color Tahitian Pearl and looks beautiful in the sun. Even my wife told me not to sell it but I did anyway  enjoy
