Received an email a few days ago from Gilt City Los Angeles about a tailor company coming to L.A next month offering bespoke suits. Never heard of them, seems they are located out of San Francisco and Shanghai. They don't specify the types of fabrics they use. Prices are about $450 for their suits, which is obviously not bespoke price, more like OTR.

Curious if anyone has heard of them. Thanks to this forum, I found about WW Chan and have been quite happy with them.

Hey, sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I'm one of the founders of Proper Suit.

We are indeed based in San Francisco, and come to LA pretty often also. Most of our fabrics are non-branded entry-level wools... about what you'd expect in our price range. We do have access to some Loro Piana and other stuff at a higher price point too if you're interested. All of our new suits now come standard half-canvas, and we have options for a full-canvas and handmade full-canvas as well.

I'd love to make you a suit, or anyone else on StyleForum for that matter, and get your feedback. If you'd like one, PM me and we can discuss details.

Let no one convince you that this is proper bespoke of the quality of Savile Row. It is a cheap cock-shy at it. No self respecting bespoke tailor would use "half canvas" for a start.

Sorry, but I didn't see where anyone but the OP chose to use the word "bespoke."

I will be watching for reviews of this company's work with interest.

It states on the company's website that their suits are 'bespoke custom-made', FAQ 2 second paragraph.

Personally, I think if this guy is a tailor/cutter and his suits are bespoke then I am the Queen of Sheba. He probably doesn't know one end of a needle from the other

Sadly yes but there is the world of difference between that rather odd decision and the quality of the garments which benefited: that is the issue here and no one should be of the view that crap has suddenly been turned into gold.

Do you operate a store front or have a location where one can see examples of your

Lots of tailors use half canvas, particularly for their semi bespoke/MTM creations (eg. Steed, Davies & Sons, Des Merrion, Barrington Ayre etc. etc.). And, this Steve DeWald person does state they do use full canvas and fully handmade as well. Most tailors have a range of options for their customers.

Certainly no one ever said they were the quality of Savile Row.

First of all, no one is saying crap has been turned into gold. Secondly, there are many things that lie in between crap and gold. The question is not whether or not these $600 are equal to $6,000 suits. The answer to that is obvious. The question is whether or not they are equal to other $600 options. The answer to that remains to be seen.

Many people don't care about things like half, full, or fused (or know the difference)
For $450 for a fitted suit, a large segment of consumers would be VERY happy.
But, its not $450, it's $650.
$400 promo was a thinly veiled bait/switch, AFAIC.

What happened in England about the word bespoke is they threw out their own language.

What Proper Suit is doing is what many other mtm companies are doing- computer generated patterns with fittings after the garments are finished.
