I'm just starting to appreciate fine shoes and was wondering what the difference is between bench grade and hand grade. I have bought a couple of pair of Polo bench grade shoes over the past couple of months and really like them. I know that hand grade is generally (or always) regarded as a better made shoe -- but why?

Also, what does bench grade have that others don't? For instance, what is the difference between the Polos made in Italy and the bench grade UK shoes?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Especially considering that the thread he referenced didn't fully answer my question.
