Belt sizing question

If I wear a size 33/34, should I get a 34 belt or size up to 36 as a general rule of thumb? Also do different makers size their belts differently (in terms of hole placement, I guess)? Thanks for any help.

Usually belt size is related to what waist size fits the middle hole of the belt, that usually means there is a +-2" availible.

For MOST belt manufactures, you will buy a belt one size (2") larger than your waist size. However, I have seen some manufactures which the size has been adjusted and you buy your waist size.

Only sure bet is to try it on.

I have also seen belts marked with ranges, i.e. 33"-37". I assume this means the shortest hole is 33" and the longest is 37", meaning it's a 35" belt (the middle hole).

IU've just merasured a number of my belt and the size seems to be the middle hole. So you have + 0r - 2-3"

This is the usual way I find them,

Keep in mind, while they have this range, if I buy one where I'm at the last few holes, there is ~4" of extra belt beyond that "tip" sticking to the left, so it will flare out over there, and usually you cannot just hack the end off neatly and be done.

And if I buy a belt where I am at the top of the range, well then you have that little 2" tip tag there, and not much else, can look odd.

I like to be middle of the range so I try them specifically to be so, then you have an inch to play with either way for shirt bulk or volumetric variations.

Get a belt as per your waist size, size up only if you plan on piling on the pounds.

Really? Hmmm so maybe I made a mistake of buying a 34 when I have a 32 waist.

The general rule is one size above your waist size for casual belts and two sizes above your waist for dress belts.

I seriously don't understand why the 'consensus' is to the sizing.

Really? I thought the belt size was for the middle hole. Meaning you have plus or minus 2 inches either side. Why size up? Has this little rule come from the days when the gluttonous gentleman would eat more than his fill at a restaurant hence needed a little slack on the belt?

A size 36 belt is exactly 36 inches fom the end of the buckle to the last hole. If you buy your waist size, that's where you'll be placing the buckle; the last hole.

It's to the middle hole.
