Being ostracized at work

    I recently came into a Supervisory position and beat out a woman 5 years my senior. Tensions between her and I are a little tense. I feel she is a time thief. Taking late breaks , and generally lazy at her job.
    I have gone to the boss on more than one occasion about the break issue as have 3 other co workers.
    Nothing is done. Except the boss pitts the Lazy girl against her co workers by saying so and so said this about your breaks. So then the Lazy girl does not speak to the person who complained. Not only that she is completely miserable everyday like she has permanent PMS which is beside the point. Why would the boss not speak to her and say Policy is..... instead of so and so said this about you.
    I am deep into being ostracized at work now, because I am trying to change procedure.
    Nobody seems to like change. I've made my bed.. I guess I have to lie in it as well.

    Fuck your coworkers, really who needs their petty bullshit. Keep doing your job well, be the only guy in the godforesaken place that can get anything done, know everything there is to know about their silly simplistic business and you'll be safe as long as you want to stay there. Then as soon as something better comes up move on.

    Seriously? There is actually an episode of the Office where Dwight accuses Jim of being a "time thief."

    I'm curious to know if the OP still has his job since a recession has set in. People who are being left out or ostracized often have their days numbered, and they just don't realize it.

    my god how could anyone put up with those hours....
    I wil a maximum of 8 hours day from monday to friday (but usually 6) and if i have any meeting to do on saturday i usually take out that time from one of the days of the week.

    Anyway it is just job. I for one try to avoid socilaizing with my workers and try not to allow a social atmosphere to exist within the managment and planning level for the very problems mentioned concerning office socializing.

    of course anyone that works that crazy schedule would have to take into account the social atmosphere of the work place, but for my limited experience in the work place and talking to other businessmen the nomr still seems to be a maximum of 8 hours shifts, so as one could avoid the social aspect of the job withouta problem.


    I hold you in contempt! Seriously though, people I work with that have the 9-5 attitude infuriate me. Sometimes shit needs to get done in a hurry, or I need extra manpower, and it can be like pulling teeth getting some people to come in.

    It's impossible to tell from the OP if his co-workers are douches, or if the OP is just socially repugnant. It's probably impossible for the OP to tell, too.

    However, the offices that I've worked in that do have a cool kid clique are the most painfully uncool, whereas offices where people do their best to be inclusive and friendly usually boast the coolest co-workers. The whole cool-kid-in-the-office mentality seems to just be a painfully uncool office simulacrum of actual popularity. Man, office politics. What a waste of life.

    My experience has been that people as a whole will sell you down the river if they see you as 'about to be fired', so i'd draw first blood and get a few of them canned.

    After you get rid of a few of them, the rest will scatter. [​IMG]

    Just work hard, who cares. I've been the new guy at work before and it took a few weeks or a few months for everyone to warm up to me.

    But if you think you are doing a great job and still get fired, then you need to re-examine yourself.

    You're there to work, not to socialise. Throw yourself into your job, who cares if they say hello or not.
    I disagree, i think its easier to fire someone who is unfriendly. If you're at least good for a warm hello, i feel it helps. I also think its important to adhere to your moral standards. People will test you, and they will respect you more if you stick to your morals.

    I agree that you should always say a friendly hello and goodbye. Nothing else is required though, certainly not if you are not well-liked. After a while of non-conversation, they'll forget they are supposed to not like you.
