You definitely don't wanna dress like the rest of the guys here in Salinas. Normal dress here usually just consists of a big baggy black scarface or Bob Marley shirt, baggy jeans or dickies and some nike cortezs. I might be the only person in this town that owns a decent pair of slacks and a suit that actually fits.

Just to be clear, in case anyone decides to get offended, I wasn't knocking anyone's town, just saying that if someone's asking about "California" style, they're probably thinking of LA, and maybe SF, and not the towns they may not have heard of.

I do have a very fashionable friend who grew up in Modesto, though, who will curse it till the day he dies.

The 99 and its branches have a special place in my heart, even if that place was taken over by red necks, wal-marts, and applebee's.

He moved to SF, and is now at Cornell in their hospitality management program. He wants to either open a restaurant (or ten) or run a hotel, I'm not sure which. And he's flaming, which also has a lot to do with why he doesn't live in Modesto, and why he hated it in the first place....

If you spend any time downtown in NYC, you'll find that people dress almost exactly the same in Silverlake/Echo Park/Hollywood in L.A. In fact, you'll run into a lot of the same people - actors, photographers, models - who split their time between the two cities. Just dress as yourself, you'll find your own comfort level.
