I've always worn shoes like Rockports in the past - my workplace is business casual and I've prioritized comfort. I'm looking for something nicer but not too formal, are there any other manufacturers I should consider besides Allen Edmonds and Alden (AE is much more available in my area). I'm hesitant to buy online unless there are easy returns.

Look at the Florsheim Limited and Imperial lines. Duckie Brown's influence is starting to be seen and the quality is vastly improved over the last 2 years.

I used to wear Rockports too, but realized that the quality was ****, and these days you can't even find a decent pair with a traditional shape. Go with Bass.

Why would you want to look any further than AE seconds for value for your dollar? Sure you can get a shoe with a very noticeable flaw, but you can return it and try again until you get one that works for you.

Compare Rockport to ECCO or Clarks and all are equally comfortable.
Rockports current 'Day To Night' or D2N line is respectable enough and if found on sale will be a good buy especially if you need that type of shoe.
I have 6 pairs of their older DresSport line (mostly wingtips) and they are very good quality for what they are.
There are shoe afficianados and there are those who need all day comfort (salespeople, hospital staff, etc.).
When I worked sales I can tell you that my feet appreciated my Rockports very much through 12 hour shifts.
To me they are worth every penny even at retail. I've many times worn them even with suits on stormy weather days.
Don't understimate this manufacturer.

To the OPS original question,
Allen Edmonds is definitely worth looking into and probably where you want to be in upgrading.

Just get fitted for AE's or Alden's in store and buy lightly used pairs on eBay.
