This may sound alien around these parts: I am looking for a cheap pair of shoes aesthetically in proportion to their price. Well, perhaps I am exaggerating, but I think the mass of inchoately stylish men overlook the necessity of items that can be worn in inhospitable circumstances. I have 3 great pairs of shoes: two C&J balmorals, and one pair of Alden unlined chukka boots - none of which, I would call on in inclement weather - and the weather isn't always the limiting factor: I forbear wearing my nice shoes in any occasion I deem insiginifcant; thus, more often than not, I slip on something less elegant.

I'm looking looking for something that straddles casual/dress like say my unlined Alden chukka boots. But I was thinking along the lines of a heavily brogued tan oxford, with the welt evident at its side. Although I may go with suede in the end, since I love it so much. Something versatile that could be worn with jeans or pants, and preferably goodyear welted. The leather quality is of lesser concern for me than it usually is. Thanks!

I've been buying old Bostonians, Rockports, Florsheims, etc. from thrift stores at around $10-20 apiece. Shine them up and they're great bad weather beaters.

$200 gives you a lot more choices--try e-mailing Allen Edmonds for their discontinued and seconds prices?

I ended up returning them because the creasing on the leather was simply ridiculous after I wore them at the store to try them on, and I maybe wore them for another 10-15 minutes otherwise. Construction and quality is so shoddy I feel like they'd fall apart after a week.

Some seconds and clearance leather soled Allen Edmonds are definitely available under $200.

What he meant is that rubber soles are better for inclement weather.
