Watch this movie. It's amazing.
It's one of the best reviewed films of the year and the hype is real, IMHO.
I believe this was already discussed in the "what movies are you watching lately" thread.
Son of a bitch.
I did a search and it didn't come up.
Bumping because it's a crime there isn't more talk about this film.
Not showing in my area. =/
Good movie. Reminiscent of Underground. Not sure I would go with "amazing," but definitely refreshing. Artistic for sure.
I've had this movie on my radar. I live in LA too so there's no excuse.
I have a feeling I won't like this movie at all but I'll check it out anyways. Based on the trailer the film's aesthetic seemed forced which is usually a good indication that I won't be enjoying it.
THIS. Seems like another patronizing New Yorker take on the Southern magical negro.
But I'll still check it out.
Google Image Search for "magical negro":
i watched it last night. my girl cried a lot. really loved this movie. go watch it
I'm not sure why'd you think this? Could you explain a bit more?
I don't think the "magical negro" cliche applies at all. Generally, for that cliche to work the character has to be exceedingly wise and perceptive or actually magical AND use their abilities to assist the white main character. I didn't get that vibe and there are no white main characters. Also, I didn't think the film was patronizing. It portrays the citizens of the Bathtub as both admirable and deserving of derision and contempt. There's a complexity to the characters. For all the films sense of whimsy, I don't think any characters are elevated to being JUST symbols. Everyone's feet are on the ground.
Also, just had a thought. In some ways, this film isn't that topically different from Cormac McCarthy's The Road. It just goes 100 MPH the other direction in setting and tone and genre.
