BB digital tailor

They do it at 346 Madison, I think.

Someone here or on AA said that the results weren't that spectacular. Something about, "a lot more is needed to insure a perfect fit than a bunch of digital measurements."

Haven't used them for suits, and I don't think I'd trust them to do shirts that I cared a lot about. But for button-downs, it is a good service. They only really screwed up one shirt--out of an order of 4, one had a waist about 3-4" too slim-- but they replaced it with an apology and no other comment. A good service if you wear button-downs and want a selection of fabric, and don't fit into BB's standard sizes.

Haven't used them for suits, and I don't think I'd trust them to do shirts that I cared a lot about.  But for button-downs, it is a good service.  They only really screwed up one shirt--out of an order of 4, one had a waist about 3-4" too slim-- but they replaced it with an apology and no other comment.  A good service if you wear button-downs and want a selection of fabric, and don't fit into BB's standard sizes.
Is the digital tailoring any cheaper than their standard MTM? I can't envision how it would be any more accurate than a well done set of human-originated measurements.

Though with the absolutely abysmal customer service at BB in LA, I wouldn't trust their human measurements either (much less the sitting around for 20 minutes waiting to be assisted). WW Chan has spoiled me greatly.

Which Brooks do you go to?  Downtown, Century City or the new one in Beverly Hills?  Which (if confined to one) had this abysmal cust. serv. and what was the nature of it?

Downtown. I recently went in to return an online purchase and spent 15 minutes waiting in an almost empty store for someone to help me. The person who eventually helped me was nice enough, but some of the other staff were pretty surly. If I'm going to take time out of a business day to walk into a store, I don't think prompt (and if not prompt, at least friendly) service is too much to ask for. Especially when you consider that downtown LA is probably the last bastion of daily business dress in Southern California, and should be a core market for them.

For suits, Digital is cheaper simply because you can't get the handmade quality that way. For shirts, can't say. My main motivation in trying it out was getting reliable measurements taken. Had had one shirt made about 15 years ago from the Boston shop, which never did it for me. By contrast, the woman staffing the department in NY seemed to know which end was up, and I've been generally happy with how things have turned out.

I got a digitally tailored suit at BB very soon after the practice started, when they were offering 30% off to get people to try it.

I won't say that it was an abysmal experience, but there was certainly nothing notable about it at all. It's a very, very far cry from bespoke, that's for sure.

To begin with, there was some screwup where my trousers were vastly too large, and the guy kept on saying, "No, that's about right, the tailor will just fix things by hand," until eventually it became clear that I was wearing mis-labelled trousers made for someone 50 lbs heavier than I was.

The selection of fabrics was mundane. There was a selection of "base" styles; I got whatever was designated "stylish", which ended up being a three-button sack-like suit--the "classic" or whatever was presumably even more sack-like, but the one I got was nothing remotely stylish or fitted or anything.

There was a very limited number of details. You could choose the number of vents, and get working cuff buttonholes (at further extra cost), but you couldn't get fancy linings, or choose the exact pleating or rise of the trousers, or get any shape other than the small number of designated shapes.

I think at the time it was about $850 or so, with the discount. I do wear it all the time--it's my main Generic Gray Suit--but only because it's there. I'd never do it again; at full price it's a huge ripoff, and even with that starter discount, it's barely cheaper than Chan or Hemrajani, who do much better, and much more customizable quality.

Granted, I'm not an especially difficult person to fit. But I think the whole digital thing is a worthless gimmick for most people.

Interesting -- I used to Like the Downtown store, but I've had once bad experience there too. Probably none of the old, hunched over grey-haired men are there anymore. It's unbelievable how bad the sales help is at Brooks nowadays. Just pure ignorance of the basic principles of traditional dress, or dress in general for that matter. I hear that Harb is pretty good in downtown. I was there years ago and liked it. Better than the one in Beverly Hills.

I think they left the old hunched-over gentlemen at the old location on 7th when they moved. A pity. My parents bought me my one-and-only-ever 3B sack suit at that old shop for some family event long ago, and I remember the experience, if not the suit, quite fondly. I'm not a big American Trad guy, but I like a lot of the Brooks accessories. Getting worse service at BB than I get from the kids working at Gap doesn't exactly warm me up towards their institution. Harb has some nice stuff but I tend to buy either much less expensive things than they sell, or custom stuff from HK.
