    Hey,

I'm looking to purchase a ladies Cartier Tank watch, but I found a Baume & Mercier Tank on eBay that is almost identical looks-wise. It's from the late 1970s, the case is solid 18k gold, and it's in good condition. Priced at $1,000.

Is it worth it? Should I hold out for a Cartier Tank, even if I have to buy just a gold-plated one? My budget is $1,200 or less, and Cartier gets pricey very quickly.

    Thanks for your help, guys!

Settling for the almost right is the best way to create regret later

They are not even close to the same watch. Movements are totally
Different and the demographic they targeted...

I think you need to ask yourself why you are trying to buy a certain Cartier watch? How familiar are you with the models, series, and movements? Why are you on ebay (full of frankenwatches).

Do not buy plated - it will wear off eventually. Buy solid gold.

This is true but it is the least of your concerns when buying a vintage watch.

I can't really recall what items I have that are gold-plated, safe for a pair of glasses that has a rolled-gold frame. However, in your experience, has the gold plate come off? How long before it comes off? I was under the impression that, presently, products can be gold-plated to a very high standard, so much so, that before the plate wears off, one would have lost interest in the article in question.

I am totally unfamiliar with the intricacies of watch buying and the history of Cartier, I just happen to like the way the Cartier Tank looks. However, I can't afford to purchase one new, especially one with a solid gold case. So!

I was poking around the forums and I heard timezone is a good place to look for used watches. Thoughts on something better than ebay?

I generally don't like the idea of purchasing something designed to look similar to a well known product. This is one of the resons why I've stayed away from Allen Edmonds bit loafers. I think of the Cartier Tank as a very iconic style and it seems strange to end up with something that tries to be Cartier without actually being Cartier. If I were you, I'd buy something else that you really like and that is within your budget. Longines watches for one should be solidly in your price range. That said, if you're in love with this design, think you'll regret getting something else, and don't mind occasionally having to say no if someone asks if your watch is Cartier, then go for it.

I've heard good things in general about Timezone. I would not attempt to buy a watch off of Ebay without some serious due diligence at the very least. For newer watches (obviously not Cartier with your present budget but other makes you may like), AuthenticWatches and PrestigeTime are not bad places to look around.

I'm a member of watchuseek and highly recommend that forum.
