This was phenomenal. Giamatti was just beyond incredible. I love Mordecai Richler, and this was a great film in its own right. Just superb acting, and really beautifully done. Features Montreal and Rome quite heavily. Strongly recommend this movie.

Some very good movies coming out right now. Just saw Biutiful which was also phenomenal, but I might even see Barney's Version before that. Both are super solid, great great films though.

If you liked the movie at all, read the original book. The performances were great (Hoffman and Giamatti in particular) but Richler's book was epic. What it means to be a man.

The book is excellent, and the film isn't strictly faithful to it. Both are incredible, and I think Giamatti's is one the best performances of the last 20 years. And I watch a lot of films.

Ebert tends to actually have a very good list. A lot of the films he doesn't talk about in his mainstream outlets he mentions in his blog or whatever. It can be a real treasure trove.

I just got his The Great Movies, Vol. III from the library. Some really good picks in there, and as usual some interesting thoughts about them.
