Why is the movement special? Other than the fact that its the first one made in American in many years.
It's pretty and highly decorated. It's also 16-ligne, which makes it the right size to fit a 42mm case or a pocket watch. Most companies just put smaller movements into larger cases--aside from being a sloppy and lazy solution, you also lose out on the advantage of bigness. A bigger balance wheel typically leads to more precise time-keeping.
When it comes down to it, time-only movements don't diverge much other than in terms of aesthetics. That this movement is inhouse, very well-finished and elegantly shaped makes it distinctive enough, American or not.
