Barbour alterations

Has anybody sent their Barbour back for alterations to have it lengthened? It is an option that is offered on their website but I am curious how they could lengthen the coat, as there really isn't a lot of material left in the bottom hem.

And I am referring to the actual coat length, not the sleeves. If it is possible I would like to get around 5 centimeters added.

I've sent a few Barbours in for repairs and edge lining, but never anything too major. I would imagine that lengthening the coat would just entail adding the desired size strip of waxed cotton to the bottom, and attaching it. It would look like an obvious extension, but it would add the length.

What model do you have? If its a Beaufort, buy a Border or a Gamefair; if you already have a Border, move up to one of their trenches.

Thanks for the info. I have a Beaufort and...you are right, I should have bought the Border.

I will post results of the lengthening after getting the coat back.

Just a quick follow-up to say that I did send my coat in to Barbour and they did an excellent job. I had the sleeves shortened by 3 centimeters and the total jacket lengthened by a centimeters. They did add a strip of waxed cotton to the bottom but it really isn't noticeable as being a new addition to the coat.

If you have a Barbour and wish that it were a little longer...it's possible.

As mentioned in other postings, Barbour will probably add a strip of new material to the bottom of your jacket. I've had this done to sleeves and they do a pretty good job. The bad news is that when I had this done almost exactly 1 year ago, it took Barbour in N.H. almost 3 months to turn the work around. Had I done this in the summer, it wouldn't have been an issue. I have only myself to blame

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but with the temps dropping I wanted to
share a great experience:

I had a beaufort that I stopped wearing because the "functional" cut seemed out of place with most of my everyday wardrobe. I called up barbour in NH and spoke with the alteration department. Heres what they can do and approx prices:

Reproofing (30)
Additional pocket (60 ea)
Take in waist at side seams (90)
Lengthing/shortening of sleeves and jacket (varies)
Return shipping (6)

I sent my jacket to them in early september with a note requesting the waist of jacket be taken in as much as possible and a reproofing (why not?). I called them a few days after they received my jacket and they gave me the official quote. I asked her if they would be able to add a wax cotton waistbelt and loops; after she checked quickly she said they could do it for another 30. I gave them my CC number over the phone but they also take checks.

Two weeks later I get a knock on my door and a plastic USPS bag from NH. Tried on the coat and could not be more pleased. The coat now has a straight drop from the chest to the waist and the fit is remarkably more modern. The waistbelt addition looks great and allows me to taper the jacket more if I want by cinching it in the back. Overall the tailoring is impeccable; combined with the reproofing it looks like a brand new jacket. If you dont plan on stashing pheasants in your coat, I highly recommend the alteration.

Feel free to pm me with any questions, but calling them directly is your best bet (603) 673 1313. They are extremely friendly and it seems like they are willing to try any ideas you can think up. Act fast unless you want to wait till the spring to enjoy your coat.

I was definitely taken aback at first, but the beaufort is a more complicated job because they try to keep the game pocket in the back. After trying on the jacket, I would pay 90 again regardless. I plan on wearing this jacket for quite some time, so in the long run its even better rationalized.

One of the things I love about Barbour is that they will take their stuff and alter it for you. That is a great feature in my mind. I bought a Beaufort last year and would like to get the storm cuffs removed and the Bedale elastic cuffs installed instead. Haven't done it yet and probably won't until spring now but one of these days I will.

Glad I came across this.

I have a Burgley that I want shortend by about a foot and a half.
The lower part is unlined, so it would be a very simple operation.

Still, I'm undecided. Barbour would charge $75 plus for it, and I wouldn't get it back till after "Barbour season", and for $75 I could almost just buy a secondhand border or bedale (though I'd still have a useless Burghley sitting around).

I'm thinking about just going to a standard alteration tailor to have it done.

Anything in their contemporary line would be slimmer. However, you'd only have the sykoil finish.

I was going through a rack of Barbours during a layover in the UK about a year ago, and they had "slim fit" versions of all the popular models (bedale, border, beauford etc). Not sure if you can get them here, but it's worth looking into.

Also, I was really surprised by how inexpensive barbours are on ebay, for<$120 you could buy, reproff an have altered a secondhand barbour.

Has anyone had the sleeves lengthened on a Barbour jacket? I assume this would involve sewing a strip of cloth on the end. I think it would look OK, but don't really know. Also if the coat is older and worn, can Barbour match the shade of the fabric? I have a Border and Beaufort, and both have sleeves that are a bit short for me, especially the Beaufort.

Does anyone know just what their "bind cuffs cotton" alteration is? I just got my Beaufort, and am thinking I'd like to 'dress up' the sleeves a bit with cuffs. The plain sleeve ends look a little . . . plain. Given the black corduroy collar, I think that matching black corduroy sleeve cuffs would look good. Of course I can call their N.H. offices, but I'm wondering what others have had done to their cuffs.
