Paris Banh Mi, on Mott St. in Chinatown. It's not great by most standards, but better than everything else in NYC. Like I've said in other threads before, Vietnamese food in NYC is teh sucks.

I'll be completely honest when I say that I preferred the pho in Chinatown to the stuff in Saigon. Hanoi was better though.

Oh it did. Banh mi, shrimp fried rice, egg rolls, Stone Smoked Porter, and lots of Sriracha. Life is good. Makes for a great meal plus leftovers.

I think what I love most about Banh mi is that they're always cheap and they're very large. For $4 you can get something infinitely better than anything a "sandwich artist" could make you.

The guard dog take you? They charge her more than they charge me. Moral victory.

Dude. It's so true. She was like "2 sammiches" and the lady made them and charged her 10,000. Guarddog said "Shouldn't it be 8?" The lady steadfastly insisted that she gave us "extra meat" so it was 10. Sounds like BS but I figured she wouldn't try to scam a Viet-looking chick.

I suppose you are more charming than her anyhow.

I've been going there a few times a week since they were charging 5000, and i complain and tell her she'll never see me again to her every time she adds another grand on to my bill, so she's wary of me

There's no fish sauce involved; and jalapenos are for pussies.

Banh mi without pate is not banh mi, IMO.

To the OP: I would never bother making my own banh mi when they're so damn cheap at the store.

Btw, best banh mi in Mtl is from a little joint near Berri-UQAM metro. They're smaller than the typical banh mi and they have this secret sauce instead of Maggi. Haven't been there in a while though...

NYC BANH MI UPDATE

Just got a pretty good pork banh mi at Bahn Mi So No 1 on Broome and Mott. I think it is 369 Broome St. $3.95 and it fills you up. Not as good as Saigon but much better than I expected.
