I really like the look (surprise!) of the older style workshirts, which often were collar less and just buttoned half way.
Are there any even half available brands doing this now? EG seems to have a bunch, ive seen some pretty cool from RRL (which looks a bit too much like cowboy movie wear though) and japanese brands like warehouse and post overalls. But most of this is difficult and expensive to get hold off.... So, any other ideas?

edit: also interested in band collor shirts that button the whole way, and pull over, chin strap style shirts with normal collar.

I'm not familiar with your terminology but I think you mean half plackett shirts. Search in Google on half plackett or closed front shirts you'll get some hits. Here in Australia, Hard Yakka do a bunch of half placket/closed front shirts in cotton drill. You might also look at www.old-town.co.uk and sister site www.tinhouse.co.uk for a very nice closed front shirt. You can't order online and the lady owner does not have a great telephone manner.

If you can find a site that sells a pure white cotton in half placket let me know. If you need urls of Australian workwear sites, PM me.

thanks Milkman. well, english isnt my native language, so I might have gotten the terminology wrong. Half plackett seems to be what I mean, yes

Old town has a lot of cool stuff, but ordering out of the UK seems to be a bit difficult. Im sure more people here might be interested in australian work wear urls, so post away!

If you look at:

http://www.lulu.com/content/609054

you will find a free download ( in .pdf ) showing how to make these shirts. No pattern is required, as it is all slab and strip sewing - so simple a kid can do it.
These shirts are still popular in Australia, especially in S.E. Qld. and they are part of Australia's official "folk costume". The site:

http://au.geocities.com/yearoftheoutback2006

tells you all about it.

Actually, the c.fr. style shown is easier to make than a polo shirt tab front. Also, it keeps returning to fashion on a regular basis.

The RRL looks great. The guy from reapeattofade wears his well, it's a half button down, and nice and worn the way it should be. The J crew is nice but needs alot of wear and wash to bring out some character.

I'm always on the hunt for a great banded collar shirt. But there are too many atrocious ones out there. The colors have to be right - the white collar and blue body seems to be the classic combo. The collar can't be too high - in this regard the J crew is good because it's only a 3/4 inch collar - nice and subdued that can be spread out casually with the top two buttons undone. Of course, half button-down is prefered - like the guy in the repeat pic - but they are harder to come by, which is why that RRL seems to have everything going for it.
