Bad Idea - Tux Question

I understand that matching orphaned suit coats never works. How about tuxes? If both the jacket and pants are new, black, from the same brand, and have satin details, is this going to result in an acceptable outcome?

It's likely that the shade of black will be different. Just because it is black does not mean they will match. There are a million different types of black fabrics available.

and don't forget that dinner suits are also made of midnight blue fabric, like the pants in the picture.

May be an effect of the lighting. They are described definitively as black, not midnight blue.

Regardless, it sounds like this probably wouldn't work out huh?

I'm not a fan of the jacket -- flap pockets and what looks to be a plastic button? Also the lapels look off. You can probably find a better option.

Pants look midnight blue to me -- is that belt loops I'm seeing on the pants, tux pants don't have no stinking belt loops

Not all blacks are the same, and not all weaves are the same. I've done it successfully, but that was only because both the jacket and the trousers had cheap origins and sourced the same cheap black wool. And the pictured dinner jacket looks pretty bad. Flapped pockets and no breast pocket?

Depending on the maker, it can work. Brooks Brothers sells tuxes that way.
Modern dyes and computer control can keep fabric very consistent. Requiring that both parts be cut from the exact same bolt to ensure consistency is, at least for mass produced stuff, a somewhat outdated idea.

But with that picture of the pants, I would advise caution. The entire point of midnight blue is that it's blacker than black, but it would not match paired with a true black jacket. As is often the case with stuff like e-bay, the seller could be a moron and is describing the pants wrong.

It's not a problem if you get a white dinner jacket.

Appreciate the thoughts. All valid points and well taken.

What do I say to one of my best friends when one of his groomsmen is wearing a white jacket?

I agree- I have had my share of issues with stupid ebay sellers.

Will pass on this idea.

Out of curiosity, who is the maker? If it's a maker known to make separates (like JAB, BB) then it's not a big deal (if they are from the same year/model), but if they are truly orphaned pieces, it won't work.

That pants you posted should be matched with my RRL Tux on my ebay listing.
