Once again, I'm looking for some recommendations. I've been looking for a backpack for the past week and haven't had much luck. I'd really like a canvas bag with a kind of classic style. The only one I kind of like so far is the Jack Spade Military Backpack. I don't mind spending $300 on a backpack, but I don't want to spend that much on a backpack I just kind of like.

The only real requirements are that it can fit a book 11x14 inches, is built to last a long time, and it would be a big plus if it was weather proof, or at least water repellent. To give you another example of the style that I'm looking for, I really love Filson Duffle bags, but I found their backpack to be pretty ugly. Any ideas?

If you want filson, get filson. Otherwise, look into military surplus and skateboard companies.

Yeah, I agree with Max, The Military Surplus places have some pretty cool older style bags

Personally I have a heavily padded and armoured Icon Squad backpack that I only wear when I am riding my bike and need to cary stuff. Its Aerodynamic too.

been debating on this one at JCrew for awhile now. with the 20% coupon that was floating around, it would've been ~$40. waxed canvas with brass and leather detailings. -Jeff

Don't bother. The old waxwear stuff was pretty cool. The new waxwear fabric they're using is ridiculously light and flimsy.

Oof, the filson backpack is ugly. Make no mistake, I lust after their briefcases and duffle bags, but they definitely missed the boat on the backpack. Consider military surplus.

I bought this the other day, it's quite nice. The fabric is thin and I haven't tried it in the rain, but it looks good. A bonus feature: it smooshes down to be incredibly small, and so you can put it inside other bags as a backup. It's made by whichever English company J. Crew uses for all their waxed canvas stuff; I have their big waxed tote as well and it's extremely functional and a perfect bag of its type, if you know what I mean.

Thanks guys, I'll check out the JCrew bag but I think I'll probably go military surplus and weatherproof it myself (is that possible?).

maxnharry - What bag is that? It looks sweet.

It's a vintage Swiss military bag. They run $20 to $30 and will generate lots of compliments. You can find them all over the place. Make sure to get the canvas/leather one.
