Backpacks and... style?

My dilemma: I tend to dress fairly nice even on off-work days, so long as it's not too hot outside. I also tend to travel around and occasionally wander with a camera (a DSLR), sketchpad, book, etc. I also go on various shopping trips with my girlfriend where I invariably end up carrying any trinkets either of us might buy. So, I tend to carry a backpack. What I do know is that the sort of backpacks I carry (lowepro type deals) definitely do NOT work with cords and buttoned down dress shirt, anything involving a sport coat, etc. What I don't know is, what does work? Basically, looking for ideas and guidance - if you're going to be wandering about some place for six or eight hours, need to lug about some books, heavy camera, girlfriend's newly purchased jeans, and happen to dress decently (examples might be dressy cords + RLPL-type striped dress shirt in spring, dark jeans/shirt/sportcoat in fall, sweater and cashmere overcoat in winter) is there any over-the-shoulder backpack that would work well with this sort of look?

Hmm. Tough situation. Can you hire a servant to follow along, and carry your truck?

A beatup tan leather messenger satchel works for me. I also have one in bright red PVC, which is um... less versatile.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
