If it is a formal occasion, when in doubt wear a suit. And don't wear black. A navy or charcoal suit would be fine. And if you "out-dress" your friend, that's his problem.

Yeah, in all seriousness, what he said. I don't think anyone will be comparing your outfits and think that your friend is a schlemiel.

At $30 per plate, it's not going to be some super formal occasion, so I doubt he would under-dressed anyways (even if he wasn't giving the speech).

A quick distillation as I understand it: black is the least versatile common suiting color, black is ideally reserved for eveningwear, black suits will wash out most skin tones and cause you to look wicked pale, black suits will bring about the end of Western civilization...

Should you be genuinely interested, you could easily spend five or six hours searching threads on this topic and learning more.
