Authentic Rolex?

I know virtually nothing about non-Oyster Rolexes (and a lot less about those than guys on the watch forums), but a few things strike me as fishy:

The idea of the watch having been conceived of as a pocket watch explains its large size, but in 1940 nobody would have worn a wristwatch that large. Back then, 30mm would have been an appropriate size for a man.

The display back also strikes me as unusual. I thought that was a more recent feature, unlikely to be seen then. That being said, I'd consult the experts at www.rolexforums.com

It's a mariage. As "authentic" as it can be (because it's still a Rolex, but in a new case and with a re-done dial...), but still a mariage.

I re-read the ad and now I see what you're saying. The first time I saw it I thought the implication was that Rolex had produced a wristwatch out of a pocketwatch movement. The "fake" part to me is the "Rolex" name on the dial: this is no more a Rolex than an early Panerai housing a Rolex movement.
