I work in the head office of a Bank and shoes other than black are uncommon and, amongst middle and senior managers very, very uncommon. Which is not, in itself, a reason not to wear them.

Square-toed, poorly maintained black shoes are pretty common, but they don't stand out because they are black and 99% of men wear black shoes to the office.

One needs just to make a judgment about whether one wants to stand out a little, or not.

Dark brown and burgundy will stand out, but will still, in my view, present as professional - provided everything else is okay. Cigar is on the border - but I wear it with a mid-grey suit in the warmer months. Tan is definately out.

+1 Was hard to pick the comment I aligned withe most here regarding our peers/colleagues at work. The crew here would simply be horrified if I were to tell of the engineering sector and its propensity to dress in a certain style....its called Comfort Comfort Comfort. Trainers with dress pants. I could provide other horrors, but in the interests of all, I really think engineering is the worst sector for dressing. They earn heaps, dress like they heading to the gallows.

i left out my introduction to this thread. i'm fron austria, this is also a hymn from ausrian singer rainhard fendrich.

actually, there's nothing to fight murians to mix up this. cangaroo versus mozart. we all know this...

clothing rules have been made centuries ago and we're in the middle of changes. no prob.

i've been taught to stick with black, when it's to be of importance...

Seconded. Anyone turning up to an SMC lunch looking like they care will stand out like dog's balls. And everyone in the room is basically a millionaire.

omg, i didn't want to start a revolution.

what i've learned through the years. break the rules - only, when you're aware of them.

imo, you fall into this category and you live it successfully...

    chapeau

Exactly. There's a good analogy to be made with food here I think: everyone has to cook, just like everyone has to dress themselves. While some people make cooking a hobby and put a lot of time, energy and money into it, most people just cook and eat whatever's cheap and quick.

Of course cooking is a much more popular hobby than dressing well, which is a shame, because while I don't have to taste your Dolmio spag bol, I do have to look at your ugly ass shoes and foul shiny black polyester dress pants...

Well after reading about business dress codes i wonder where the APS has gone wrong. Here in Canberra its basic black by both genders and its black RTW or OFT from the cheaper end of the spectrum. Time was when Black was an attitude confined to the cultural creatives but since moving to Canberra and working with or for the APS i hardly wear it.

As for square toed shoes there a blight on the landscape, worse is that most punters don't bother to shine them.

    Don't knock the Dolmio yo!

And about Joiji's leather orders, it sounds interesting but what are we to do with a piece of leather without someone making stuff out of it? Although I do want a new horse arse or sting ray card case.
