Was it only for DJ credit card members or what?
But yeah that does sound tragic.
I remember back in 2009 I was at The Glen David Jones VIP night and that place was packed.

    G'day Jim,

As a Canberran myself who lived in Sydney for 5 years hopefully I'm of some help. Oxford St itself won't be much good at all, I used to work for Robby Ingham up the top of Oxford and it's mainly fashion labels. But if you walk up to queen St right at the top at woolhara, turn left and a few hundred metres you will find both Herringbone and MJ Bale only a few doors away from each other. They would be a good start, as would the Herringbone outlet at Surry Hills, but I'm not sure on what they have at the moment.

You have plenty of budget though so should be able to find something. You might find something at DJ's just don't expect much service, like most DJ's. I also don't do much shopping in Canberra, certainly not for tailored clothes so I know what you mean. A lot of the problem here, is again the snobby service at the boutique type places like blades, John Hanna etc. Some of them have some nice stock actually, but can be intimidating.

    Hope this helps anyway.
    Ta
    Jason

Cheers mate. I might just swing by this weekend!
The whole popped collar thing was completely unintentional, however (for those wondering).

FWIW I saw plenty of blue cotton and various wool suits at herringbone outlet last week. mostly in the size 40s and above. also there was a size 36 made in japan standard grey flannel pants hiding among the weird ones with cargo pockets.

Hey all, not a regular poster but thought id share my experience with Meermin

Discontent with the shoe options in Sydney i thought id give Meermin a crack. Ordered two oxford (captoe and a wholecut) and the delivered price was under $200 per pair!

Made in spain, hand lasted, goodyear welted and supposed good quality leather used by other top shoe houses. Ill post some picks up on my tumblr www.stickysteps.com when they arrive and share here!

Seems too good a deal not to share with fellow aussie SF'ers

If the need is not that urgent then you could wait as both Blades Menswear and John Hanna both on Budna Street do decent sales in June and they have a good range of suits drastically reduced. Oxford Street Paddington is not a destination for suits.

As for Jason's comments about snobby service at these stores I have found they have been quite friendly and helpful, the last suit i bought was at John Hanna, maybe its because I look like an APS SES officer?

Guys, for those with experience in hats, specifically Akubra Imperial fur felts - how much "shrinkage" have you found on these models?

I've been told that hats 'shrink' and as for me, I measure dead on a 58cm and and have been told to buy a 59cm and place foam pads underneath the inner sweatband and wait till it conforms to my head. Is this sound advice or do I just buy a 58cm because that's what size my head is.

I'd appreciate the opinion of anyone here with experience.

That is sound advice - they do tend to shrink. Though some shrink more than others - and, of course, how you use it has an affect it as well. If you leave your hat on the parcel shelf of your car it will shrink a lot. If you tend to get warm wearing hats you will also tend to shrink your hat (the leather band absorbs sweat and can contract as it dries).

Shrinking can be reversed to some degree with a hat stretcher - but I would go the 59 and the worse thing that can happen is you keep the foam in place because it doesn't shrink much. This is much much better than trying to wear a hat which is too small.
