True, except that the main bulk of COGS is shoes and freight paid overseas, which has no GST component.

American Tailors have handgrade for $595, benchgrade for $500.

Double Monk sell a suede Tetbury for $450, calf leather for $550

In Manchester a pair of handgrades cost 475 pounds (782 dollars). Tetburies are between 305 - 355 pounds ($500 - 550 AUD). I think those prices are the same as RRP in London, C&J are fairly strict about retail pricing (which is why they stopped selling to P.Lal).

I would suggest that the American Tailors prices are for existing stock bought at a more favourable exchange rate and the prices will rise again soon. I bought a pair of Weymouth from them back in 2011 for $700 AUD. At the time if I ordered them directly from the C&J mail-order service in London they would have cost me $650.

American Tailors usually go on sale in the first week of July. I'd keep an eye out next week.

I'm skeptical about this. I remember one forum (Ask Andy? Film Noir) had a member who worked as a contract employee in the Northampton shoe industry for over a decade. He said that C&J invest the most in newer machinery and keep their factory plant and processes in the best condition. He had many interesting observations about each particular company he had worked for.

PappaR and any others thinking about how to dress professionally without wearing a suit could do a lot worse than take inspiration from this example.

And rent, and storage and all those other things Mr Harvey complains about.

That is indeed some very good price from AT. Even though we do get the 20% off VAT.

But he also has a 10% GST.

At the end of the day my point is this. C&J seem to have a business model which allows retailers at opposite ends of the planet to sell a product at similar prices. Evidently the prices are sufficient for the retailers to make a profit, otherwise they wouldn't stock them.

Loake evidently don't do this. I wonder how their business model is different.

So good that C&J came down on the heads like the wrath of G** for making the rest of their outlets look bad.
